Late in November of 2022 I delivered a discussion on the problems and potentials of presenting animals using visual art and text. The talk was a small part of a national symposium on the role of research in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s ITP sector. Slotted into the “creatives” section of the event, I was invited to show examples of ongoing artwork and talk about how research might relate to what was displayed. Responding to this invitation, I chose to show the first eight panels from a large series of yet-to-be-shown work. Discussion about topics related to the artwork included the use of animal imagery as signifiers of human affairs; what might occur in aestheticized accounts of animals; and a contention found within the content of the artwork that colonialism can be pictured, seen, and understood as a human and non-human enterprise. The following pages in this documentation show what was displayed at the symposium and then concludes with a few final remarks.
