For a lot of people involved in this exhibit – many of whom were new to both Belgium, Germany, and indeed the continent of Europe – the sheer weight and complexity of the exhibit´s subject appeared quite unfathomable, and whether spoken of or not, the discussions that took place during the time of preparation for the exhibit seemed always to be made in the shadow of an unexperienced and ultimately unimaginable sense of violence and catastrophe. As a result, the artworks that came out of this process varied greatly in their preparedness or interest to address the exhibit´s outlined topic. In an effort to somehow hem in this subject´s vastness, I chose to confine myself to a single facet of contemporary Belgian society, focusing on the iconography of nationalism, and on the increasing popular interest in Belgium for far-right political ideologies.
