Late in the winter of 2006 I received an invitation to exhibit a body of work for a rather eccentric artist collective in Locarno. It was the stated policy of this group to make art exhibitions out of that which was seen to sit outside of the usual - where attachments to the known, the accepted, or even the condoned were things to be looked down at and frowned upon. And though it was never quite stated, it seemed to me that my status as a New Zealand citizen and the distance of my home-country to the gallery helped qualify me for their gallery´s programme. Curious to learn more, I bought a train ticket and travelled from Zürich down to Locarno, where I was intrigued to discover a gallery situated on a dark, narrow street dominated by the architecture of the town´s San Antonio church. Some short time later, whilst in conversation with two members of the artist collective, I also learned that the intended timeframe for the exhibit would coincide with Locarno's well-known film festival.
